Kentucky Legal Aid is encouraging people still dealing with the long-term fallout from the December 2021 tornadoes to attend a free legal clinic in Glasgow today.
The “Your Money, Your Rights” consumer rights clinic will run until 3 p.m. at the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library. Brandon Solomon, communications coordinator with Kentucky Legal Aid, told Glasgow News 1 that while they encouraged preregistration, walk ins are welcome and will be accepted when possible. Those interested can come-and-go at their convenience.
The event is part of a recurring series of consumer rights clinics offered throughout South Central and Western Kentucky, according to Kentucky Legal Aid. The clinics are specifically designed to assist individuals who were impacted by the December 2021 tornadoes.
Legal Aid officials say that, although the storms happened several years ago, many people are still facing financial and legal challenges tied to the disaster. Those issues can show up months or even years after the physical damage is repaired.
Through these clinics, Kentucky Legal Aid staff work with Kentuckians on a range of civil legal problems that often surface after major storms, including assistance with fraud and identity theft, credit-related problems, and document preparation. That document help can involve simple living wills and powers of attorney.
Kentucky Legal Aid also reports that its broader consumer law efforts for tornado survivors are intended to address long-term financial impacts connected to the December 2021 storms. Those impacts can include damaged credit, overwhelming debt, predatory lending, bankruptcy concerns, and identity theft linked to job loss, displacement, emergency borrowing, or disaster-related fraud.
By continuing these clinics, Kentucky Legal Aid says it aims to support community members as they work through those challenges and move toward financial and legal stability.
