A quick time out proved decisive for the Caverna Colonels in their first game of the Boys Fifth Region Tournament. They beat Elizabethtown, 73-44.
The Colonels led 17-13 after the first quarter. The Panthers scored 24 seconds into the second period and trailed by two, 17-15.
That basket prompted Caverna coach Josh Pittman to call a time out and talk defense with his team.
The Colonels responded with a 6-0 run on baskets by Kenyon Martin, Jaycion Graves and Tyson Martin. They never looked back.
Caverna’s lead was 39-25 by halftime. Then the defense suffocated Elizabethtown in the third period. The Colonels rolled with an 18-4 advantage in the third period.
The win punches Caverna’s ticket to the semifinals of the tournament Monday against Taylor County. The Cardinals whipped Thomas Nelson, 70-44. Caverna improved to 24-7 with the win. The game against Taylor tips at 5 pm Monday at Green County High School.
