T.J. Samson Community Hospital is expanding its robotic surgery capabilities with the installation of Intuitive’s new da Vinci 5 system.

The system is designed to further advance minimally invasive care by improving outcomes, efficiency and the insights available to surgeons, according to a press release from T.J. Regional Health. The da Vinci 5 replaces the older da Vinci SI model previously used in the hospital’s surgery suite.

The new platform can be used for a range of minimally invasive procedures in general surgery, urology, gynecology, bariatrics and other specialties, according to the press release. It is one of several recent investments in robotic technology aimed at expanding options for patients in southcentral Kentucky.

General surgeon Dr. Michael Saridakis said the technology does not replace the surgeon, but instead extends the surgeon’s capabilities.

“With the da Vinci 5 Surgical System, the robot isn’t operating on its own – I control every movement from the console,” Saridakis said. “The robotic arms are an extension of my hands, offering a greater range of motion, enhanced 3D visualization, and exceptional precision. This technology allows us to perform complex procedures through smaller incisions, often resulting in less pain and a smoother recovery for our patients.”

T.J. Regional Health CEO Neil Thornbury said the hospital is “thrilled to be a leader in this field” as it adds new robotic tools. He said the da Vinci 5 offers “cutting-edge technology” that allows for extreme precision by surgeons while keeping patients close to home for advanced care.

Thornbury said patients who qualify for robotic procedures may experience shorter recovery times, reduced risk of complications and improved outcomes. T
