Barren County will seek federal money for the severe wintry weather when, and if, it becomes available.

Emergency Management Director Garland Gilliam recently told Glasgow News 1 that his office will request public assistance money as reimbursements for money the county’s already spent on things like buying salt, payroll, debris removal and road repairs. Public assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency only become available when the president approves a disaster declaration, which Donald Trump has not done, according to Gilliam.

Barren County’s damage threshold needed in order to qualify for public assistance in roughly $209,000, which is likely already met since Farmers RECC alone racked up approximately $526,000, Gilliam said. FEMA personnel were in Barren County conducting a Joint Preliminary Damage Assessment — the first step to getting federal assistance — on Feb. 2, Gilliam told Glasgow News 1.

The severe weather occurred between Jan. 23-27. During the severe weather the Kentucky governor, the county judge-executive and numerous cities declared states of emergency.
