Caverna opened with a 11-3 run against Hart County on Tuesday night, and cruised to a 78-54 win in the first game of the Boys 18th District Tournament.
The Colonels improved to 22-7 overall and await the winner of LaRue County and Green County to play in the district title game Saturday at 6 p.m. at home. The Hawks and Dragons face each other Thursday at 6 at Caverna.
Gavin Lightning buried a 3-pointer 16 seconds into the game, but the Raiders answered with a 3, 32 seconds later. The Colonels rolled off an 8-0 run over the next two minutes.
Despite the early deficit, Hart County hung around and trailed 15-9 at the end of the first period.
The Colonels caught fire in the second quarter and outscored the Raiders 29-13 to lead 44-22 by the break.
Lightning led Caverna with 21 points, while Jaylin Craine and Tyson Martin each scored 18, and Kenyon Martin finished with 10.
The Colonels have advanced to the Fifth Region tournament for a second-consecutive season. That tournament will be played at Green County this season. Last season they lost in the semifinals to Adair County, 56-49.
