Barren County residents will soon have a chance to clear out bulky household items without making a trip to the landfill.
County officials have announced this year’s free countywide cleanup, giving people several days to dispose of larger trash items at a central location. According to Solid Waste Coordinator Marcus Thurman, the cleanup is intended to make it easier and cheaper for residents to tidy up their homes and properties.
The cleanup will take place March 23 through March 27 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, with an additional half day on Saturday, March 28, from 7 a.m. to noon.
All drop-offs will be handled at the Barren County Road Department lower lot. Residents will be able to bring a variety of large household items, including appliances, couches, dressers, mattresses and recliners will be accepted. However, several categories of materials will not be allowed, such as tires, brushes, batteries, liquids, paints, oils and pesticides will not be accepted at the cleanup site.
The office of solid waste is asking people who participate to help keep the operation running smoothly. Officials say residents should be prepared to help unload their own items into the provided dumpsters at the Road Department lot.
They also ask that smaller items be boxed or bagged before arrival. That step is expected to speed up unloading and cut down on loose trash around the site.
County officials say the cleanup offers residents a convenient option to get rid of larger items that may not fit in regular household trash pickup. The multi-day schedule is designed to give people several chances to participate, including a Saturday morning for those who cannot come during regular weekday hours.
