Barren County residents are being urged to renew their boat and vehicle registrations on time, even if they do not receive the usual reminder in the mail.
“The notices that you get in the mail that tell you when to come in and pay your tags have been delayed for the month of March,” Barren County Clerk Helena Chase Birdwell said during the February Barren County Fiscal Court meeting. “If you know you’ve got a farm tag on your vehicle, or if you’ve got a trailer, or…if your birthday’s in March, come on in [to the Barren County Clerk’s Office]. Those notices are supposed to come out but are delayed, so if you wait on them you might find yourself waiting in [a] line.”
Birdwell told Glasgow News 1 that March is typically the busiest month because the farm, trailer and weighted tags are combined with the birthdays. March is also the month that begins boat renewals, she added.
The delay does not change residents’ legal obligation to keep their registrations current. Birdwell is encouraging people to check their normal renewal dates and come to the county clerk’s office to renew their tags on schedule, whether or not a postcard arrives.
“Those notices are a convenience, but late notice…does not modify the liability of timely payment,” Birdwell said. “So I can’t waive any fees or anything if you don’t come because you didn’t receive your notice.”
Birdwell’s announcement is aimed at helping Barren Countians avoid late fees that can come with expired registrations. The clerk’s office is reminding drivers and boat owners that they can still complete their renewals in person during regular business hours, even while the state notices are delayed.
The Barren County Clerk’s Office is located on the first floor of the Barren County Government Center on Glasgow’s Square.
