Barren County Schools is moving ahead with plans to further ease traffic congestion around Barren County High School.

Construction of the current access road, which offshoots from Trojan Trail and runs behind the Barren County Middle School, began in 2024. Though the need for an access road that would alleviate some of the early morning and afternoon traffic congestion was discussed during a 2023 board of education meeting.

Barren County Board of Education members recently approved Sherman Carter Barnhart to design a road extension connecting to Roseville Road, according to Director of Facilities Anthony Frazier.

“We’re just planning: Where’s the best place to put that road,” Frazier said. “You don’t want to run it…and then years from now not have any room to put anything [else].”

Frazier said the property necessary for the extension was purchased under past Superintendent Bo Matthews.

The move allows the design process to get underway, although a construction timeline and project cost have not been released. Frazier said once the design is finalized the project construction will go out for bid.

The extension is expected to improve traffic flow in and out of the campus by giving families another option for entering and leaving the area. The goal is to increase safety and reduce delays for students, staff and drivers who travel near the campus each day.
