Barren County’s three school superintendents all voiced their support for the Pre-K for All initiative, currently being spearheaded by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.
The initiative was announced in June 2025 by Beshear, who said it was an attempt to “advance the commonwealth’s public education system and job growth.” Since then, the push for Pre-K for All has garnered support from several local individuals and organizations, including Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd, Cave City Mayor Dwayne Hatcher and Barren Inc.
Glasgow Independent Schools Superintendent Chad Muhlenkamp, Barren County Schools Superintendent Amy Irwin and Caverna Independent Schools Superintendent Amanda Abell recently told Glasgow News 1 that they support the initiative, and all expressed a willingness to expand their preschool offerings.
“We know that kindergarten readiness is a primary predictor of long-term success, and increasing access to Pre-K recognizes that early learning is the foundation of that success,” Irwin told Glasgow News 1. “I believe all students deserve this early foundation. Locally, we see firsthand that public Pre-K programs provide the academic and social alignment children need to hit the ground running.”
“I support the Pre-K for all Kentucky children initiative,” Abell said. “School readiness is foundational to success [and] when students begin kindergarten prepared, confident, and ready to learn, they are far more likely to thrive throughout the rest of their school experience. High-quality, voluntary preschool opportunities strengthen early learning, improve long-term outcomes, and serve as a powerful tool for raising student achievement statewide.”
Muhlenkamp noted that while they support the initiative, implementing it is not without challenges.
