Katie Murphy scored her team’s lone run in a 1-0 win over Georgia Southern, and drove in a run against Eastern Illinois for WKU over the weekend.

Murphy, a former Barren County softball player, and the Hilltoppers opened their season in a tournament in Statesboro, Ga.

In the top of the third against Georgia Southern, Murphy reached on an error and also took second base. A groundout from senior Jenna Blanton moved Murphy to third, setting up Morgan Sharpe’s RBI single through the left side.

Murphy also scored a run in the season-opening 6-0 win over UNC Greensboro.

In the final game of the tournament Sunday, Murphy drove in one of two runs for the Hilltoppers.

After a single and stolen base from junior outfielder Kendle White, Murphy cashed in with a single up the middle for the second RBI of the game.

WKU (4-1 overall) returns to action Friday morning against Army in Macon, Ga. Friday afternoon the Hilltoppers take on Mercer.
