The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has issued an Immediate Suspension Order to Richie Pharmacal, a pharmaceutical distribution company based in Glasgow. On Tuesday, the DEA executed the order that suspends Richie Pharmacal’s ability to handle and distribute narcotics on the federal schedule list. This high-level enforcement measure was brought about due to several compliance discrepancies and violations of the Controlled Substances Act identified by DEA diversion investigators.
This enforcement order is part of a larger investigation coordinated by the Louisville Field Division of the DEA, with additional support from the Knoxville District Office and the Glasgow Police Department. The DEA’s oOffice of the Chief Counsel has also been involved in the case.
The decision to issue the suspension was made following concerns over public safety. According to Martin Red, the Diversion Program Manager for the DEA’s Louisville division, “If we see that there’s imminent danger to the public safety of our communities, we have to do what we think is best.”
DEA officials are currently on-site inventorying the products. These products will be shipped to a lab unless the company successfully appeals the suspension. The appeal process will be conducted in federal court in Washington, D.C. The company has the right to request a hearing to contest the suspension, but must do so within 30 days.
