Kentucky, Barren County and Glasgow road crews are preparing for the winter storm predicted for this weekend.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet stated that District 3 — the district that serves Barren County — is mobilizing its crews to begin the District’s anti-ice operations. Anti-ice operations involve putting brine on the roads. Operations will take place on Thursday and Friday, a District press release states.
Drivers are advised to be on the lookout for snow and ice vehicles on the road, and to give them plenty of space.
The District 3 snow and ice team is monitoring forecasts and is prepared to mobilize crews to treat roads as needed,” the release states. “The [National Weather Service] is predicting major snowfall amounts with considerable traffic impacts, but the forecasts continue to evolve.”
Barren County road crews are likewise preparing roads. As previously reported, Barren County Road Department Supervisor Jamie DeGroft said his crews would begin pretreating the 614-miles of county roads “as soon as the rain gets out.” DeGroft told Glasgow News 1 on Jan. 22 that multiple trucks went out “first thing” in the morning to begin pretreating, and would likely work until dark.
Glasgow Public Works Superintendent Jim McGowen said city crews are out brining the 90-miles of city streets. McGowen said they would be treating the roads for the next two days.
The National Weather Service forecasts the snow, wintry mix and frigid temperatures will begin on Saturday and last until Sunday night into Monday. Barren County — and all of Kentucky — is in a winter storm watch from midnight on Jan. 24 to 6 a.m. on Jan. 26.
