A property tax exemption bill has been introduced in the Kentucky Senate.
Senate Bill 51 seeks to amend the commonwealth’s constitution to exempt permanent residence of those 65 years old or older “any increase in the valuation of the real property that is assessed after…the owner turns sixty-five years of age or the year the owner acquired the real property.”
At the Jan. 20 Barren County Fiscal Court meeting Barren County Sheriff Kent Keen said 92 percent of property taxes had been collected. Barren County has roughly 18.6 percent of its population that is over 65 years old, according to the U.S. Census. Using the 45,609 figure provided by the census, that amounts to nearly 8,500 people.
The bill stipulates the proposed amendment would be voted on by Kentuckians. Senate Bill 51 is still in the Kentucky Senate, according to the Legislative Research Commission.
