Barren County road crews will be out preparing roads in advance of the winter storm forecasted for the area on Saturday.
County Road Department Supervisor Jamie DeGroft said crews would treat the roads, likely after the rain passes on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
“We’re going to start pretreating roads as soon as the rain gets out,” DeGroft said. “Bear with us, we’ve got 600 miles of road.”
Barren County Magistrate Tim Coomer, who is also the transportation committee chair, said later that the county had 614 miles of county roads.
DeGroft said department crews prioritize certain roads over other, such roads as main state-connected roads, and dairy farms.
“We will get everywhere but that’s how we go about this,” DeGroft said. “So just be patient with us.”
Coomer said the department has “plenty of salt” to combat snow and ice.
“We are completely full of salt,” Coomer said. “One of the improvements we’ve made in transportation is adding more storage, so if we do have this we have plenty of salt. As far as efficiency…we’re more efficient in snow removal now than we’ve ever been.”
“We are prepared as well as we can be,” he added.
