With his band Black Stone Cherry on a winter break from touring, guitarist and author Ben Wells visited WCLU Radio this week, speaking about releasing his second children’s book and performing at home.

“We had a great year touring and we got to end the year right here in Glasgow with two hometown shows at the Plaza,” Wells told WCLU Radio. “It was very special having so many people come from almost every state — and then people came from out of country.

“They came and shopped at our shops and drank our local coffee and came to concerts. They just said this town was like a Hallmark town to them, and that meant so much to me and the rest of the guys.”

Wells said it’s very special to hear outsiders talk about his hometown.

“We have such a charm in Glasgow,” he said. “So it makes us very proud.”

The musician said the acoustics at the Plaza Theatre are “unbelievable.”

“If you’re in the balcony and somebody’s on stage, you can have a full-on conversation with them,” he said. “That’s fascinating.”

After releasing his first children’s book “Good Girl, Sunny Pearl!” in 2024, Wells published his second book “Clark Barks!” toward the end of last year.

The author and illustrator said he and his wife have three beagles, and his goal is to write a book about each one.

“It’s a true story,” Wells said of his second release. “Clark is our middle beagle and he is a loud barker. A lot of times when I get these ideas, the titles will come to me first, and then I’ll start writing the story around them.”

The Glasgow native said he grew up writing stories and drawing pictures, and enjoys working on these projects while his band isn’t on the road. Wells said he’s been able to visit schools, along with his dog Clark, and read to the children.

“The kids get excited,” he said. “That’s the most rewarding part there, is when you see kids come back and say: ‘I love your book!’

“Parents are sending me photos of kids reading it before bed … that means the world to me.”
