For the second time in three years, the Caverna Colonels are winners of the Fifth Region All “A” Tournament. They beat Campbellsville, 65-43, to punch their ticket to Owensboro later this month.
The Colonels never trailed Friday night in the title game at Bethlehem High School in Bardstown. They opened the game on an 8-0 run, and led 18-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Caverna repeated a quarter-opening run in the second period — this time, 6-0. The Colonels racked up a 36-20 lead at halftime by outscoring the Eagles, 18-8, in the second quarter.
Campbellsville made a run to open the third period, but could not fully close the gap. The Eagles opened with a 6-0 run and Caverna led 36-26. The Colonels, though, responded with an 11-0 run in the middle of the period, and led 54-29 after three.
Jaylin Craine led Caverna with 17 points, while Kenyon Martin added 13, Jaciyon Graves posted 11, and Gavin Lightning finished with 10.
The Colonels improved to 10-5. They will face Owensboro Catholic in the first round of the All “A” State Tournament at Owensboro Sportscaster on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 10 a.m.
