Highland Elementary Principal Phillip West presented to members of the Glasgow Independent Schools Board of Education during their December meeting at Glasgow High School.

West said Highland increased its proficient and distinguished percentage in every tested area except writing, and scored above the state average in reading, math and science.

“We had our overall highest index since Covid,” West said. “So where do we go from here?

“Writing is a focus.”

To help improve student writing, West said they will work with South Green Elementary and the district’s central office to revise the elementary writing plan, and that writing needs to be a school-wide focus.

“I do think we need a more consistent school-wide and, actually, district-wide plan for writing,” West said. “So that’s why I appreciate the opportunity to work district-wide to look at those things.”

After West’s presentation, board member William Thornbury said West is doing a great job leading the school and has his full support.

“The most important thing is that the children enjoy the environment,” Thornbury said. “It’s one of the best environments we have in our school system.”
