A former Caverna boys’ basketball coach and educator received a 12 month conditional sentence after he pleaded guilty to his criminal charges during his recent Hart County Circuit Court appearance.

Terrence Miles resigned from his positions with the school district on May 2 when a video circulated on social media sparking an investigation, which resulted in Superintendent Amanda Abell’s intending to terminate Miles. Shortly after resigning, he was arrested by Horse Cave police.

Miles was charged with second-degree assault, fourth-degree assault (child abuse), second-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree official misconduct and first offense failure to report child dependency/neglect/abuse, according to court records.

His case was resolved through mediation rather than by a jury trial, court records state.

“This case was referred to felony mediation so we could have input from the victims as well as law enforcement,” Kyle Williamson, commonwealth’s attorney for Hart, Larue and Nelson counties, said. “So it was a mediated agreement.”

Miles pleaded guilty to all counts with the second-degree assault count being dismissed, Williamson said, who also said Miles’ 12 month sentence was probated for two years, meaning Miles will not be jailed assuming he follows his other conditions.

“He took 12 months probated on each count to run concurrent for a total of 12 months,” Williamson said. “That’s probated for two years on the conditions that he forfeit his teaching license for a minimum of four years, that he have a lifetime ban from any and all schools in Hart, Nelson, Larue and Barren counties [and] that he gives a public apology to the victim.”
