Anyone looking for a good thing to do with their natural Christmas trees after the holiday season can donate them to be turned into a fish habitat.
Each year the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife accepts Christmas trees as part of its resources recycling program. Natural Christmas trees donated to the department’s annual “Christmas for the Fishes” program are used to create underwater habitats that help fish thrive in lakes and reservoirs across, including at Barren River Lake. donated evergreen trees are placed in local reservoirs and arranged in clusters to form dense branches and small pockets where young fish can hide. The structures also attract sportfish as smaller fish move in and out of cover.
The department will accept the trees from Friday through Jan. 16. Trees must be natural and free of lights, garland, tinsel, and decorations. Limbs, wreaths, brush, and other plants will not be accepted.
Locally trees can be dropped at Port Oliver Boat Ramp near the dam. Those interested in donating trees can call Eric Cummins at 270-746-7127.
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife records the locations of these underwater habitats, and GPS coordinates are made available to anglers through the department’s “Lakes with Fish Attractors” webpage and the FishBoatKY app.
