Barren County unemployment rose slightly during the month of September, but is still below the 2024 unemployment percentage.

The unemployment percentage for September 2025 was 4.8 percent, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics that recently released its county unemployment data. In August 2025, Barren County’s unemployment was 4.6 percent, and in September 2024 was 5.3 percent, the center stated.

Martin County experienced the highest unemployment for the month at 8.5 percent and Cumberland, Scott, Shelby and Woodford counties each came in at 3.7 percent, which was the lowest percentage in September 2025. The statewide unemployment was 4.5 percent and the U.S. average was 4.3 percent, according to the center.

In September 2025, there were 18,133 people in Barren County in the labor force with 868 unemployed, the center stated.

“Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to count people working,” the center stated. “Civilian labor force statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians who are actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks.”

County unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted due to the small sample size.
