In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it meeting, members of the Project Development Board said construction on the new Barren County Judicial Center is underway.
The Dec. 10 agenda featured only two items — architect and construction manager discussions. Both had little to say except about the next step of construction on the 58,000-square-foot building slated to begin on Dec. 15.
“We do plan on Monday starting the foundation work,” said Tommy Gumm with Alliance Corporation, which is the project’s construction manager. “That is the rammed aggregate piers — that’s the first item that goes in before we put our concrete footings and walls in…and they are scheduled for next Monday.”
“You…will hear noise from those rammed aggregate piers but it should be localized,” added Joey Nolasco, an architect involved with the project. “To give you guys an idea of what they’re doing: they’ll take aggregate — gravel — and they’ll be forcing the aggregate into the ground by pounding it…and it consolidates the ground around that pounded aggregate and that’s what increases the bearing capacity of the soil.”
Despite the noise, Nolasco said there is no cause for concern to nearby businesses.
“There should be no worry [from] any adjacent businesses,” he said. “It’s all a tried-and-tested method.”
Numerous county and state officials gathered at the now-vacant lot off West Main Street in Glasgow to participate in a groundbreaking ceremony on Oct. 30, signifying the beginning of construction on the project that was authorized by the Kentucky General Assembly in 2020.
