Plans for a second school resource officer for Caverna Independent Schools were solidified at the Cave City City Council meeting. Council members agreed unanimously to enter into a contract with the district beginning Jan. 1, which will run through the remainder of the school year.

The agreement will cost the district $25,000, paid in two installments. The contract was previously approved by the Caverna School Board last month, contingent on the city’s approval.

“This is totally separate from the current contract,” explained Mayor Dwayne Hatcher.

The current agreement covers one officer at a price of $55,000 for the school year; however, with a second officer, that cost is expected to rise for the upcoming school year. “I have already spoken to Mrs. Abell and their board that there will be some increases,” said Hatcher. Amanda Abell is the superintendent for the Caverna school district.

Councilman Denny Doyle questioned how much Horse Cave is contributing. “Nothing,” responded Hatcher. “We cannot determine what Horse Cave decides to do. Personally, I don’t care what county it is in, it’s our local school system.”

“We have been battling this for five years,” he continued. “And maybe I shouldn’t say this, but they [Horse Cave] don’t want it.”

With little further discussion, the council approved the agreement.

The meeting also included the second reading of an ordinance allowing special-purpose vehicles to be used within city limits. This comes after Barren County Fiscal Court passed a similar measure earlier this fall.

The council’s next scheduled meeting is Jan. 12.
