Heading into 2026, which is an election year with several county offices on the ballot, people are beginning either to register or change their political party affiliation, according to the Kentucky Secretary of State voter registration information.
The Republican Party saw the greatest increase at 37 new registrations for the month of October, bringing the total Republican registration to 16,932 compared to 16,895 registered in September. However, Independent and Other registration also increased in October, increasing by eight and two voters respectively.
Democratic registration dropped by 18 voters in October, going from 11,863 to 11,845 registered Democrats. Libertarian and Constitution parties each dropped by one voter last month.
Republican registration overtook Democratic registration in August 2020, according to the State Board of Elections.
Barren County also has lower Democratic registration and higher Republican registration than statewide. A press release from the Kentucky Secretary of State’s Office stated that the Republican registration made up 48 percent of the statewide electorate whereas in Barren County that percentage is roughly 53.6. Similarly, Democratic registration accounts for 41 percent statewide and 37.5 percent of Barren County’s electorate.
As a reminder you’ll have until April 20th to register if you’d like to vote in the primary. Kentucky conducts closed primaries meaning a person must be registered as a Republican or a Democrat to vote in the primary.
