The vintage sound of a 1913 Steinway grand piano can now be heard reverberating out of the Trojan Choir Room, which is located in Barren County Middle School.
The instrument was donated to the school district by Tommy High, who was recognized at the recent board of education meeting.
“This evening we’re honored to recognize an extraordinary Leave a Legacy contribution from Mr. Tommy High, a man whose life has been beautifully shaped by music, who is now passing on that gift to generations of Barren County students,” said CheyAnne Fant, adding that the piano is valued at approximately $75,000. “This is a magnificent instrument that will now serve the heart of the newly named Trojan Choir Room.
“A space that will inspire creativity, musicians and a joy for decades to come.”
This piano isn’t the High family’s first contribution to Barren County’s music program, as High’s daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Byron Lucas, serve as choir directors for the middle and high schools.
“Every day they have the privilege of hearing the beautiful sound of that Steinway piano as they work with our students,” Fant said of the choir directors. “This is really a full-circle moment. The gift of music passed from one generation to the next now uplifting hundreds of children for years to come.”
Fant said High’s love for music began early on when he sang in church, and that music was “what first connected him to the love of his life, who would soon become his wife.”
“The two of them shared that passion together throughout their lifetime,” Fant said. “They sang in church together and community choirs and anywhere they could blend their voices in harmony.”
Some of High’s most treasured memories are the evenings that he and his family gathered around the grand piano, singing and making music together.
“Music has been his way of building memories and strengthening family bonds over the years,” Fant said. “These moments have created a musical foundation that has shaped their homes and shaped their hearts.
“Tonight we extend our deepest gratitude to you, Mr. High, for this extraordinary contribution. This gift ensures that the beauty, discipline and joy of music will continue to echo through the halls of our schools forever.”
