A big turnover and a long drive proved to be the difference Friday night in Barren County’s 29-14 loss to Macon County, Tenn.

The Trojans trailed 22-14 when they drove inside the Tigers’ 10 yard line. But they lost a fumble at the two-yard line with 5:28 left in the third quarter and the Tigers turned that into a decisive drive.

Macon County took over from its 2 and put together a 98-yard drive that ate nearly seven minutes off the clock. They scored on a two-yard run with 10:37 to play in the game. The extra point kick set the final score.

Barren entered the game without leading rusher Daylan Thomas and lineman Ethan Bertram. Both of them were injured in the game against Greenwood on Oct. 2.

The Trojans scored first in the game on a 31-yard run by Braxton Carnes. Jacob Dooley added the PAT with 7:52 left in the first quarter.

The Tigers answered on their next drive with a 43-yard touchdown run and the extra point tied the game 7- 7 with 3:52 left in the opening period.

Macon County took a 14-7 lead with eight minutes left in the first half on a 47-yard touchdown run and extra point kick.

Barren responded immediately with a 59-yard touchdown pass from Briggs Harris to Jaxson Byrd. Dooley’s kick tied the game at 14 all with 6:59 showing on the second quarter clock.

The Tigers took the lead for good with 2:13 left before halftime on an eight-yard touchdown pass. They also tacked on a two-point conversion on a busted PAT attempt. The holder was the quarterback. He picked up the low snap and rolled right, then threw to the end zone for the conversion.

The Trojans had another drive late in the fourth quarter that ended on a turnover on downs after a dropped pass prevented a first down.

Harris completed four passes for 112 yards. Byrd caught two passes for 70 yards, while Jaxon Pierce had a 35-yard catch.

Byrd and Corbin Wells each rushed for 47 yards to lead Barren on the ground.

The Trojans return to action this Friday at Warren Central in a critical district contest. The kick off is set for 7 p.m. Barren is 3-5 overall and 1-2 in Class 5A, District 2. The Dragons are 0-3 in the district.
