Both Wesley Houchens and Barry Sexton had their Barren County Circuit Court arraignments on Sept. 29.

Due to technical issues the arraignments were not recorded, nevertheless both men opted to proceed with their arraignments before Circuit Judge John Alexander. Each was indicted by a grand jury earlier in September; this is their first court appearance since that time.

Houchens was arrested by Barren County sheriff’s deputies at T.J. Samson Community Hospital on July 25, a day after an event that took place at a residence on Oil Well Road. His indictment includes one second-degree assault count, two first-degree strangulation counts — one domestic violence related and the other not domestic violence related — three first-degree wanton endangerment counts — all caused by a discharge of a firearm — a fourth-degree assault (domestic violence) count, a fourth-degree assault (domestic violence, minor injury) count and a count for resisting arrest.

His counsel entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. Houchens, who appeared via Zoom, asked for a reduction of his bond, which is $25,000, however Alexander said formal notice to the alleged victims was required in order for him to consider any reduction.

Sexton likewise entered into a not guilty plea. He was indicted on a second-degree assault charge and for leaving the scene when his vehicle crashed on Matthews Mill Road severely injuring his passenger. The passenger had to be extracted from the vehicle and was taken to T.J. Samson Community Hospital. She was later flown to Skyline Medical Center in Tennessee due to her injuries.

Alexander set both men’s pretrial conferences for Nov. 10 at 1 p.m.
