The Barren County Circuit Courtroom was a hub of activity that featured an arraignment and numerous pretrial conferences on a busy Monday.

In the morning, Circuit Judge John Alexander presided over the arraignment of 33-year-old Kyle Ankney, who was recently indicted by a Barren County grand jury on first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy and incest charges. His counsel entered him into a not-guilty plea and Alexander set his pretrial conference for Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. Ankney has a $100,000 cash bond, according to the Barren County Detention Center.

In the afternoon, Thomas Houchens and Mark Hanks each had pretrial conferences.

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Resa Gardner said the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center still needs to complete Houchens’ evaluation to determine “whether or not [he] is competent to stand trial,” a court order signed by Barren County Circuit Judge John Alexander stated. His next pretrial conference is set for Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.

Hanks is charged with fist-degree rape and sodomy. Commonwealth’s Attorney John Gardner said he has a counter-offer that he needs to discuss with the girl involved before proceeding. Alexander set Hanks’ next pretrial conference for Sept. 22 at 1 p.m.
