Several governmental offices and businesses will be closed on Monday in observance of Labor Day.

Closures include the Barren County Clerk’s office, Glasgow’s city buses, the county government center, the Luska J. Twyman Municipal Building — Glasgow city hall — and the county courthouse.

Monday’s Glasgow garbage pickup will be Tuesday, Sept. 2, along with the regular pick up, according to Glasgow City Administrator April Russell.

Most banks, and post offices are closed as well. In that vein, mail and packages traveling by the United States Postal Service will not be delivered.

Labor Day began as a movement in the late 19th century “to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being,” according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Oregon was the first state to pass a law recognizing Labor Day on Feb. 21, 1887. Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York passed similar laws recognizing the day later that same year.

Seven years later, on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law recognizing Labor Day as a federal holiday and established it on the first Monday in September.
