United States flags at state buildings will be lowered to half-staff until the end of the month in remembrance of those killed in the Minneapolis shooting.

This order from Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear comes after the White House released a proclamation on Aug. 27 similarly ordering “flag[s] of the United States  flown at half-staff…until sunset, August 31, 2025.”

“American children should be safe and feel safe in their schools, yet our country is mourning the heartbreaking loss of two children – each a child of God – taken too soon by yet another senseless act,” Beshear said. “Today, Kentucky stands with Minneapolis and all the families affected.”

Beshear encourages individuals, businesses and organizations throughout the commonwealth to join in this tribute.

On Aug. 27 a gunmen, identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman, opened fire through the windows of Annunciation Church while children were participating in a celebratory Mass, marking the first week of classes at the nearby Annunciation Catholic School. An 8-year-old and a 10-year-old were killed while sitting in the pews, and 17 other children and adults were injured.

FBI Director Kash Patel said that the attack will be investigated as an act of domestic terrorism and a hate crime targeting Catholics.

Not including this shooting, there have been 57 shootings at K-12 schools so far in 2025 with five of those taking place since Aug. 1, according to outside reporting.
