Barren County was one of the 73 counties that experienced a decrease in unemployment numbers between July of 2024 and July 2025 — although it didn’t fall by much.

Unemployment was at 6 percent for July 2025, which is down from the 6.1 percent announced in July 2024, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics. There were 18,070 people in the labor force and 1,082 listed as unemployed.

Due to the small sample size, the unemployment numbers are not seasonally adjusted. In the center’s release it states unemployment numbers should only be compared to previous numbers from the same month due to the “sharp fluctuations” the percentages undergo due to seasonal events, like school openings and closings, or vacation.

“Seasonal adjustments eliminate these influences and make it easier to observe statistical trends,” the center stated.

The nationwide percentage was 4.6 percent, and the state’s was 5.6 percent.

Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian labor force statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians who are actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks.
