The Barren County and Glasgow Animal Control Board members are now looking to update the county’s animal control ordinance.

Animal control officer Shelly Furlong told the board members during the Aug. 21 meeting that she was reviewing the draft ordinance prepared by county attorney Mike Richardson and comparing it to the draft ordinance she has written.

“What I am doing right now is looking over what I have proposed and what [Richardson] has got and try to see what the differences [are],” Furlong said. “If there’s something I really want that he may not have in his maybe him and I can get together and he can tell me why we can’t have it or something like that.”

One of the points Furlong wanted clarification on was regarding restitution paid to the Barren River Animal Welfare Association for its veterinarian care they have to perform on the animal in their care, like in instances of a pending court cases that require BRAWA to house the animal for the duration.

Glasgow Police Chief Guy Howie said he’d like to see the city and county animal control ordinances somewhat similar. The city of Glasgow repealed its existing ordinance relating to animals and passed the updated one at the June 9 Glasgow City Council meeting.

The board’s next meeting is Sept. 18 where it is hoped the board members will have an ordinance to present to the Barren County Fiscal Court.
