Members of the Glasgow Scottie Band held tight in their formation Tuesday morning in the student parking lot next to Glasgow High School. The musicians and color guard stood straight and remained still as Band Director Anthony Thompson walked through the ranks.

“I’m just excited for the kids,” Thompson told Glasgow News 1 during a water break. “We’re really young this year, but the attitudes are just phenomenal.

“So I’m really excited to see just how we grow as a program, and how we mature as a group.”

After band members finished hydrating, they trickled back into their respective lines. Olivia Shirley, a rising ninth-grader and this year’s drum major, sat on an elevated platform with a view of the entire band.

Shirley said she really enjoys “the competitions and getting to dress up and do my hair real pretty.”

While she has played the flute in the marching band for two years, Shirley said she is ready for this new role, “getting to be the leader and helping everybody.”

Though “all of the memorizing” will be a challenge, she said with a laugh.

The band recently hosted a family night that included a performance.

“It went really well,” Thompson said. “We got to perform what we learned in the past three weeks and it was good for the kids.”

This year’s production is called “Outcast” and “it’s going to be a darker show,” Thompson said. “We’re going to have all sorts of cool, little effects.

“It’s a different vibe than what we’ve ever done in the past, and I was kind of aiming for that — just a restart for the whole year and see what these kids can do with something dark.”

As they progress through their season, Thompson said his goal is to create culture and a sense of family.
