Several students with the Barren County Area Technology Center earned distinctions at the 2025 SkillsUSA Championship in Atlanta, Georgia.
Alex Poynter with the Barren County Area Technology Center placed ninth in the sheet metal competition, according to information provided by the Kentucky Department of Education. SkillsUSA Kentucky took 79 secondary and postsecondary students to the national competition.
Mollie Hawkins, Karden Kinslow and Autumn Milton received a Skill Point Certificate for outstanding chapters while Brady Geary received a certificate in plumbing and Poynter got one in sheet metal.
The championship has state gold medalists compete against one another in various hands-on career and technical education skills in more than 130 occupational areas such as “3D animation to welding,” according to the SkillsUSA website.
“Along with a national gold, silver or bronze medal, the Skill Point Certificate represents the pinnacle of achievement in demonstrating proficiency and workplace readiness in the student’s occupational specialty,” a department press release states. “The industry leaders who defined the competencies for each contest determined a cut score that indicates excellence for students in technical or leadership events. Contestants who meet or exceed the scoring threshold will earn a Skill Point certificate.”
