Barren County residents once again have the opportunity to publicly honor a veteran.

The City of Glasgow announced veteran banner applications are now open and available on the city’s website. These red, white and blue banners will be hung up around Glasgow’s Public Square and feature the veterans photo, branch of service and length of service time.

“These banners proudly recognize local veterans and will be displayed throughout the square as a tribute to their service and sacrifice,” the city stated on its social media account alongside a picture of U.S. Navy veteran Kenneth Pace.

Space is limited — in years past there were less than 20 banners hung up in the fall — and the banner cost is $100. In 2024 Chairman of the Barren County Veterans Association Matt Mutter said once the banners are taken down they would be given to the respective families.

Mutter initially brought the idea to the city council in 2023, saying that he had seen similar banners in other towns.

“Hopefully, it will help show a little veteran pride in our community. We’re a very veteran rich community,” he said at the time.
