A new agriculture consortium is taking shape.

Barren County Fiscal Court magistrates approved and signed an interlocal agreement during their June 27 court meeting with Allen and Hart counties creating a Barren River Agriculture Consortium.

The 21-page interlocal agreement stated the purpose of the consortium “is to promote and support agricultural development in the Barren River Kentucky region” through the purchase of land, or properties, throughout the three initial counties. These resources will be used to develop things like cold storages and controlled atmosphere storage for produce and perishables, Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd explained.

The interlocal agreement also stated each participant, which right now is Barren, Allen and Hart counties, will pay $20,000 initially and $10,000 annually, and will have three board members — though it could increase depending on how many counties are involved in the consortium — with “no set term of office.”

The consortium’s primary office is the Barren County Government Center, according to the agreement.
