The fireworks are primed and the anticipation begins.
On July 4 the Friends of Barren River Lake and Park will host the annual fireworks show at the state resort park despite the uncertainty caused by the inordinate rainfall that occurred in the spring.
As of July 3 the lake level was 567.98 feet above mean sea level, which is 15.98 more than its summer pool level of 552 feet above mean sea level. Due to the lake level, this year’s event will not include the typical Family Day at the Beach. The 350 beach parking spots are also underwater and unavailable.
“[Because of] the flooding and the loss of beach parking spaces, attendees are encouraged to: carpool with family or friends whenever possible, arrive early to secure a good spot, use designated parking areas and be prepared for a short walk and respect all no-parking zones and marked areas,” an event press release stated.
Viewing of the firework display will be “from the hill behind the lodge or from the tennis courts.” Boaters can anchor outside the designated fireworks safety zone.
Food trucks will open at 5 p.m. with live music from “Country Strong” beginning an hour later. At 9 p.m. the fireworks are set to begin. The Driftwood Restaurant at the lodge will be opened from 7-8 p.m. as well.
