To comply with Senate Bill 181 — a new Kentucky law that restricts communication between school staff and students — the Glasgow Independent Schools Board of Education approved several communication platforms to be used by school staff and volunteers during a special-called meeting Monday night in the district board room.
Superintendent Chad Muhlenkamp said the school district has sent out information to staff members and current school volunteers about the new law and the approved forms of communication.
“We are trying to build that network so that staff and everyone feels comfortable,” Muhlenkamp said, adding that they already held training with coaches last week since the new law goes into effect this Friday. “They’re going to be impacted first as summer practices start.”
When the district gets the final communication app up and running, Muhlenkamp said it will be linked to the Glasgow Independent Schools app that is already being used and is available for download on the district’s website.
“It’ll be linked to that same app,” he said. “It’s a one-stop shop for families. So that’s the good thing about it.”
Since the new law also affects school volunteers, Muhlenkamp said new volunteers will receive informational packets that explain all the procedures and processes for the approved communication systems.
“Don’t want it to be a discouragement at all for anyone that wants to come help out and be a part of the district,” he said. “It’s just things that are going to be a little different.”
Muhlenkamp said there will be a learning curve for these new platforms and procedures, but “it’ll be a good thing.”
In other business, the board approved the second reading of policy changes, the 2025-26 employee and student handbooks and pay dates for coaches.
