The Boys and Girls Club of Glasgow-Barren County hosted a Juneteenth celebration Thursday afternoon.
Representative George Brown Jr. of Lexington was the keynote speaker, and the event also featured a performance by spoken word and hip hop artist FlexRL and an expressive piece by Angels of Praise, a dance group from Caverna.
Malachi McKissack, a recent graduate from Glasgow High School, performed the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which is often referred to as the Black National Anthem. He said “it just means a lot” to sing this particular song “knowing how impactful the lyrics are.”
“It’s just a powerful song that means so much to my ancestors,” McKissack said. “Persevering through struggle, having faith in God and getting us through enslavement.
“It meant a lot to sing it.”
JeanBosco Tuyisenge and Keiovon Wells, of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. at Western Kentucky University, said they were invited to the event to represent their chapter and to interact with the kids.
“We were telling them about our principles,” Tuyisenge said. “And showing them some of our dances and just things like that.”
Wells said their chapter is “really big on service.”
“The service aspect of things, it means a lot to us,” Wells said. “Any time we have the opportunity to come, provide an opportunity to show kids what we do or what we’re about, we’re always going to take that opportunity.
“No matter if we have to travel three hours, or 10 minutes. We’re going to find a way to make that happen.”
