Glover Road bridge repairs start soon

The bridge on Glover Road will soon be back open.

Barren County Emergency Management Director Garland Gilliam said parts of the road — like the bridge and the two low-water fords nearby — had been damaged by the numerous instances of severe weather that traversed through the commonwealth. Gilliam said the delay in repair is due, in part, to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s categorization of that area.

“Glover Road had two low-water fords that we are wanting to do mitigation on and replace, and then it [has] the bridge that has a big hole washed out of the embankment,” Gilliam said. “[The bridge] doesn’t need mitigation [but] FEMA, because you’ve got low-water ford, low-water ford and the bridge right there together, wrote that up as one project…so I finally got them to separate it. Now the low-water fords are mitigation projects and the bridge is a repair projects’ it’s two project.”

Mitigation funds are those given by FEMA to build something back better than it was before the disaster. In this case, Gilliam said, the two nearby low-water fords will still be waiting for mitigation approval while the bridge already received a repair cost estimate from the FEMA team who inspected the damage.

Scotty’s Contracting and Stone is the contractor, according to Gilliam. He hopes the repair will be completed quickly and the bridge can be reopened, but was unsure of the specifics.

“[Scotty’s] told me they would try to get there this week,” Gilliam said. “I would think a week to a week-and-a-half [to fix the bridge], but I’ve not gotten anything official.”
