The farmers market building along West Main Street is expected to be finished before October.
The City of Glasgow is constructing the new facility on its property just east of the U.S. Post Office with the plan being to lease it to the Bounty of the Barrens Farmers Market for its year-round use, which may include other types of events at nonmarket times. Now, the market typically is set up from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays on and around the lawn of the Barren County Courthouse. It moves to a city-owned parking lot across the street off the west side of the Glasgow Public Square when large events, such as this past weekend’s Sip, Shop & Stroll, are taking place around the square. In the cooler months, the market has been set up at the Barren County Extension Service auditorium. The new facility is intended to provide one permanent location that is still in the downtown vicinity.
On Monday, Mayor Henry Royse told Glasgow News 1 that the preparation of the site has progressed, but the construction company has learned from the manufacturer that the building package has been delayed by two weeks.
Jim McGowan, city engineer and superintendent of the Glasgow Department of Public Works, said the final completion date has been moved to the final week of September.
A groundbreaking ceremony took place March 4, but earth movement had already been occurring before that.
Early on, the construction company, Staco Building Co., addressed issues with the site itself involving soils and other materials. McGowan said they’ve since had delays with supplies needed to get the site ready and issues with the shipping of the building package. The facility is going to be a pre-engineered metal building, with panels that are precut to specifications. It’s up to Staco to then assemble all the pieces. Within that shell, they’ll need to construct the bathrooms themselves, for example, he said.
McGowan said the foundation is in, but the utility work still has to be done as well, and once the building package arrives –- at the end of June –- all that work will be happening simultaneously.
