RECAP: Third inning dooms Barren in regional baseball semis

Barren County carried a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the third, but the dream of winning a region took a 6-run slap there. Barren’s season ended with an 8-4 loss to South Warren in the semifinals of the Fourth Region Baseball Tournament.

The Trojans got their 1-run lead in the top of the first inning. JP Hyde led off with a single. He stole second, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jackson Reece. JP Hyde scored when Sutton Hyde hit a ball off the pitcher, and the ball rolled to third base.

The Spartans big inning started with a walk, followed by a pair of singles that loaded the bases. South Warren tied the game when the runner at third scored on a throwing error. After an out, the Spartans took the lead for good with a single that drove in two more runs.

South added three more runs in the bottom of the third to lead 6-1 after three.

Barren got back a run in the top of the fourth. Axel Dysholm reached base on a fielder’s choice. He later scored on a single by Price Thompson.

The Spartans answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 8-2.

The Trojans’ final two runs came in the top of the fifth. Reece hit a one-out single, then moved to third on a double by Sutton Hyde. Gavin Coffey drove in Reece with a ground out to second. Dysholm drove in Sutton Hyde with a single, and that set final 8-4 score.

Reece led Barren at the plate with a pair of hits, including a triple. JP Hyde, Sutton Hyde, Dysholm, Aiden Keeney, Thompson and Jax Vincent each also had a hit.

Skylar Potter started on the mound and allowed seven hits and struck out three. Colten Wilson pitched an inning, allowed one hit and struck out two. Jacob Spence pitched one and two-third inning and allowed a hit. Matthew Estes pitched the final third inning and allowed no hits.

The Trojans finished the season 24-11. There were nine seniors on the team — Dysholm, Estes, JP Hyde, Sutton Hyde, Keeney, Joey Meyers, Preston Pace, Reece, and Spence.
