The highly anticipated summer months are upon us. Glasgow Independent and Barren County schools have May 23 as students’ last day and Caverna Independent School had its last day May 21.

During these summer months, when kids are out of school, the Kentucky Department of Education is reminding people to take advantage of Summer Food Service Programs. The programs provide meals at no cost from late May through August to children 18 and under in low-income areas.

Barren County Schools is currently taking sign-ups for free summer meals until May 26, which provides families free seven-day meal kits available for pickup on Wednesdays of each week. Pickup locations are Austin Tracy, Hiseville, Park City and Temple Hill elementaries in the morning and Eastern and North Jackson elementaries and Barren County Middle School in the afternoon.

Caverna Independent Schools is beginning its summer meal deliveries on June 2 at multiple locations in both Horse Cave and Cave City. Cave City locations include Happy Valley Apartments, Glenwood Apartments, E.P. Terry Estates, Schoolhouse Lane Apartments, Park Haven Apartments and Thomas Doyle Trailer Park.

Glasgow schools will distribute summer meals at Highland Elementary School, off Scottie Drive, beginning on June 2 through Aug. 8. Breakfast and lunch will be served Monday through Friday with the exception of July 4. Food Services Director at Glasgow Independent Schools Stacy Jessie said no sign-ups are required to get free meals. Breakfast will be served between 8 and 9 a.m. with lunch to follow at 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

“The more people we can help the better,” Jessie said.

This summer more than 2,000 sites will serve meals to Kentucky children. The number of Summer Food Service Program meals and meal sites has increased annually as more awareness of, and participation in, the program has occurred.

The Summer Food Service Program is part of the National Summer Food Service Program, a federally funded program operated by the USDA.
