As a capstone to the extensive renovations at Jackie Browning Park, community members, county officials and Barren Inc. representatives gathered in the county park to celebrate its completion with a ribbon cutting.
“The Park was originally four fields and we’ve [now] added two additional fields,” said county Park and Recreation Director Chris Jennings. “We’ve added shade structures, all new back stops, new netting, score towers behind each field’s home plate, new restrooms, new playgrounds, additional parking and paved our existing, a traffic control parking lot and we remodeled our concession stands and previous restrooms.”
Former Barren County Judge-Executive Davie Greer, who was judge-executive from 2002-2014, praised the park and the county.
“I don’t know about you all but I am so proud [of this park],” Greer said. “It’s one of the greatest things the county’s ever done.”
Towards the end of the celebration, Jennings said the park’s renovation will not only benefit people locally, but also help Barren County tourism.
“It’s huge for our restaurants, our local shops and our hotels,” Jennings said. “We’re hoping Jackie Browning Park can play a small part into the economics here.”
Jennings said plans for the park’s renovation began in January 2023, almost immediately after the new administration began. Phase A of the renovations were approved in December 2023 with Phase B approval being in February 2024.
