Even if it’s severe weather and weather warnings are in effect, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration radios will remain silent.

Until Wednesday, May 21, NOAA weather radios will be offline as they undergo a mandatory upgrade. The National Weather Service stated the upgrade’s timing could not be changed.

“Weather radios in central Kentucky will not sound for any warnings that might be issued for severe weather through Tuesday night,” the weather service stated.

Barren County Emergency Management Director Garland Gilliam reminded people to have multiple ways to receive weather-related information.

“You’ll still be getting notifications from the National Weather Service if you have the apps on your phone [and] the media will still get notifications,” Gilliam said. “Even though the warning sirens are working they’re not meant to be heard indoors, so we suggest…people have that AM/FM radio, have their TVs on the weather channel, have their phones charged and be looking at the apps.”

“Unfortunately, we’re expecting some bad weather…people should be vigilant in checking [other] sources,” he added.

Currently, Barren County is under a flood watch until May 21 at 1 a.m. and an 80 percent of precipitation is forecast for this afternoon and into the night.
