The Trojans’ bats did the work in the bottom of the first, and Skylar Potter closed the deal on the mound as Barren County beat Allen County-Scottsville, 5-1, in the 15th District Baseball Tournament.

JP Hyde led off the bottom of the first with a walk. Jackson Reece executed a perfect bunt between first and the pitcher for a single, which moved JP Hyde to second. Sutton Hyde drove in his twin brother with a single, and moved Reece to second. Then Gavin Coffey drew a walk to load the bases.

Axel Dysholm followed with a single that drove in Reece and Sutton Hyde. Aiden Keeney moved the runners up a base with a ground out to third. That set up Price Thompson to drive in Coffey with a sacrifice fly.

The early lead put Potter in good shape on the mound.

“It takes the pressure off, right, in a big game like this in the district tournament,” Trojans head coach JR Estes said. “To have a four run lead doesn’t mean you’ve won the ball game, but it lets you relax and know you don’t have to be as fine or perfect with every pitch.”

The game settled into a pitcher’s duel from there. Potter gave up four hits, one run, and struck out five in seven innings. The Patriots’ Eli Stamper gave up five hits, three of which were in the first inning.

Allen scored its only run in the top of the fourth, while Barren added its final run in the bottom of the fifth.

The Trojans were solid at the plate. They only struck out once. Dysholm led the way with two hits, including a double, and two runs batted in. Reece, Sutton Hyde and Jordan Harris each also had a hit. Five different Trojans scored a run.

Barren returns to action Tuesday in the title game at Richardson Stadium at 5:30 p.m. against either Glasgow or Warren East. Those teams play each other today at 5:30.
