The Barren County Family YMCA is partnering with the American Red Cross to host a community blood drive on Wednesday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event highlights the critical role of blood donation in treating sickle cell anemia — a life-altering genetic disorder that disproportionately affects African American communities.

Among those impacted is six-year-old A’Shanteigh Massey, who was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Hemoglobin SS — the most common and severe form of the disease — when she was just one week old.

“I have had numerous pain crises, blood transfusion, spleen removal, tonsillectomy, and am now dealing with a new diagnosis,” Massey shared in a statement. “Through all the obstacles I face in life I know that God only gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers.”

Massey’s treatment includes daily Hydroxyurea chemotherapy medication, blood transfusions as needed, and ongoing pain management. She is supported by a strong network of family, faith, and community.

Organizers hope the drive will not only raise awareness, but also encourage more people — especially African American donors — to roll up their sleeves and help make a difference.

Sickle cell disease causes red blood cells to become hard and crescent-shaped, blocking blood flow and leading to painful complications, organ damage, and chronic anemia. One of the most effective treatments is routine blood transfusions, which can relieve symptoms and improve the quality of life for patients.

“African American donors are at least three times more likely to be a match for a patient with sickle cell disease than donors who are not Black or African American,” the American Red Cross notes. Increasing diverse donor turnout is key to providing the most compatible blood matches and improving outcomes.
