Aaron Wright, 42, was formally sentenced to 4 years during his circuit court appearance on May 12.
At his April court appearance Wright entered into a guilty plea in both his 2024 case and in his assault case this year. His plea agreement also has fines and court costs.
Wright’s attorney requested his sentence be probated so Wright could seek long-term treatment for his addiction and past trauma.
Commonwealth’s Attorney John Gardner said he opposed probation since Wright had never before sought treatment outside of incarceration.
“Mr. Wright has three prior felony convictions — this will be fourth and fifth,” Gardner said. “[A]ll indications indicate that he is not a good candidate for probation. He is a substantial risk of committing another crime, also, I believe, to grant him probation would unduly depreciate the severity of these offenses.”
“We’re asking from the court not to grant probation,” he added.
Judge John Alexander agreed with Gardner’s assertion that probating Wright’s sentence would unduly depreciate the severity of the charges.
“I’m certainly not without sympathy and compassion for your situation…and I’m a believer that people who have substance abuse problems ought to get treatment…. I do think there’s some potential benefit to you getting treatment but I’m not there at this point,” Alexander said. “I agree with the commonwealth that based upon what happened…, I’m not going to grant that [probation] motion today.”
Melissa Netherton, who was arrested with Wright in Park City, was also arraigned on May 12. She entered into a not-guilty plea and her next court appearance is scheduled for July 14 at 1 p.m.
