For the second straight season, the Glasgow Scotties punched their ticket to the Fourth Region Tournament with an upset of Warren East in game one of the 15th District Tournament. In both seasons, they had a losing record.
“After the season we had, I don’t think anybody expected us to be here,” coach Brandon Stockton said. “I’m really proud of the guys that got us here again. This senior group is a bunch of guys that everybody said couldn’t win ball games, but they’ve got a district championship, a district runner-up, and they’ve been to the region twice.”
“We wanted to show [the younger players] don’t give up, keep going,” said senior guard Josiah Driver.
He led Glasgow with 10 points in the regional-opening loss to Bowling Green. He is one of five seniors on the team.
Senior Colby Brewster said it’s pretty hard for his career to end, but “… it makes me feel better to know that legacy for Glasgow basketball is going to carry on.”
Last season the Scotties won their first game in the regional tournament. For a quarter Tuesday night, against a team that has not lost a first-round game in 17 seasons, it looked like they might be down to pull a shocker.
Bowling Green led Glasgow 13-10 at the end of the opening frame. The Scotties had the ball and trailed by one with less than five seconds to play in the quarter, but a turnover led to a Purples basket at the buzzer.
That layup was the start of a 19-2 run that stretched until 4:18 of the second quarter.
“We knew it was going to be a tough matchup, but I just wanted us to play with confidence, play loose, no pressure. I mean, we really didn’t have anything to lose,” Stockton said. “For us, I just wanted us to come out and play hard from the start, give it all we got and leave it out there on the court.”
The Scotties, who eventually lost, 80-53, shot 47 percent from the field, but took 12 fewer shots in the game than the Purples. Bowling Green converted 19 Glasgow turnovers into 29 points. Glasgow scored only seven points off turnovers. The Purples also outscored the Scotties by 10 at the foul line.
Along with Driver and Brewster, the other three seniors on the team are Jeremiah Driver, Quinn Nunley and Riley Wenskoski.
