Glasgow High School’s DECA Club recently won several awards at their regional competition at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green.

The Scotties tallied eight first place finishes, five second place, five third place and two fourth place awards, according to a social media post by the high school.

Glasgow senior Austin Parker, who is the DECA Regional Vice President of Finance, said the club as a whole performed really well at the event and that he enjoyed hearing a lot of familiar names during the award ceremony.

“I think we did pretty good. We brought home many awards,” Parker said. “A lot of first places, a lot of podium finishes and I heard our names a lot.”

The following Glasgow students captured first place in their respective events: Ximena Garcia, Business Services Marketing; Shree Patel, Quick Serve Restaurant Management; Josue Camarena, Accounting Applications; Ian Parocai, Principles of Finance; Walker Thornbury, Sports and Entertainment Marketing; Evan Templin, Sid Patel and Kasan Peters, Start-Up Business Plan; Yoselyn Abad and Alivia Glover, Marketing Management Team; and Danica Stephens, Food Marketing.

Glasgow senior Hayden Veach, who is the DECA Regional Vice President of Communications, said he and Parker helped out with the event’s opening ceremonies in their roles as regional officers, adding that they also assisted teachers get ready for the competitions.

Parker said his favorite part about being a regional officer is “being able to meet people with my interests, and it’s always good to get your name out there.”

Second place finishes: Ayesha Ashfaq, Business Finance; Ashelynne Graves and Trace Brooking, Travel and Tourism Marketing Team; Sam Allen, Automotive Services Marketing; Gracie Lei-Sam, Business Services Marketing; and Braden Miller, Human Resources Management.

Third place: Brookelynn Jordan, Marketing Communications; Isabela Melendez-Rodriguez and Alex Camarena, Buying and Merchandising Team; Austin Parker and Hayden Veach, Business Law and Ethics Team; Alaysha Reed, Apparel and Accessories Marketing; and Jackson Barrick, Business Finance.

Fourth place: Jamesanna Soto and Jada Wood, Hospitality Services Team; and Valeria Camarena, Restaurant and Food Service Management.

Both Veach and Parker said Glasgow business teacher Mark Gibson does a great job preparing students for these events and for life in general.

“He’s been a great teacher to me the past four years,” Veach said. “He’s been a great mentor.”

Parker added that Gibson is his favorite teacher.

“I think he’s helped me develop as a person and my morals,” Parker said.

Veach said he currently plans to major in Business Administration at Transylvania University and then go to law school for Corporate Law.

“If you do DECA you definitely won’t regret it,” Veach said. “You’ll make a lot of new friends and especially if you want to go into anything finance or business-related in college, I’d say it’s definitely a big help. “

Parker said he plans to attend Western Kentucky University and pursue a major in economics and then attend Vanderbilt University for a law degree.

The DECA Club will return to action March 2 in Louisville for its state competition.
