The Kentucky Department of Education is offering Summer Food Service training for potential sponsors, supporting groups.

Many Barren County families depend on free or reduced-price meals during the school year, but when school is out for the summer the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Kentucky Department of Education’s Summer Food Service Program provides meals to children.

Each year, the state education department’s Summer Food Service Program provides program training to organizations who plan to operate the program. In addition to the invitation to potential sponsors, the education department invites health inspectors, company representatives, auditors and potential community partners to attend a training session. The training materials also may be provided to interested parties for an online review.

Director of Nutrition Services and Afterschool Programs for Barren County Schools CheyAnne Fant and Glasgow Independent Schools Superintendent Chad Muhlenkamp said their districts had undergone such training previously. Fant said training for all the food service staff happens “closer to summer.”
